Velichov lies on the Ohře River, about 11 km north-east of Karlovy Vary. The first written record of the village dates from 1142.

The neo-Gothic Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary in Velichov was built in 1895–1896 on the site of an earlier church and consecrated in 1897. Velichov Chateau acquired its austere, classically influenced appearance after 1856, when physician Professor Josef Löschner bought it. By the U Lípy inn near the chateau stands a sandstone statue of St John of Nepomuk dating from 1835.
